“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” — 1 Corinthians 13:13

Everyone has their opinions on Valentine’s Day. I would say I have heard them all. It’s a very highly debated holiday, and for many, a depressing one too. I say have your opinions, but let me at least explain why it IS a great holiday.

It doesn’t matter what season of life you are in. I truly believe this day can be a special one for any and everyone.

You doN’T actually need a spouse to celebrate.

I know. I know. I seem bias, because I am married. This is our third Valentine’s Day together (our second one married). I also dated another guy all throughout high school. So in the past eight years, I have been single for only one Valentine’s Day.

I understand how this looks, but trust me, this isn’t me bragging. Let me explain.

Having a spouse on Valentine’s Day doesn’t automatically make it a great holiday. If you are in an unhealthy relationship, Valentine’s Day won’t solve your problems. If you are in a long distance relationship, it will make you miss your partner even more. (For instance, there’s even a chance my husband and I could be long distance on Valentine’s Day.)

Whatever your current status or relationship situation is… It doesn’t have to determine if your Valentine’s Day will be good or not.

All you need on Valentine’s Day are these “things”: yourself, family, friends, and (most importantly) God.

What is the point of Valentine’s Day then?

It is simply a day to love.

Tell your friends and family you love them. Reflect on God’s abundant and everlasting love for YOU. (“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” — 1 John 4:9–12)

Then, do something fun to celebrate the day of love.

Some of my favorite Valentine’s Days were spent with my family. My mom made cute heart shaped pancakes with red dye in them. She would cut brownies into hearts to make sundaes. She would give my siblings and I a little gift. I just grew up thinking it was a holiday for family.

If you are a girl, have a Galentine’s Day, and if you’re a guy, hang out with other single guy friends. Get heart shaped pizzas from Papa Johns and just have fun together.

If you want to be alone, make or buy your favorite dinner. Watch your favorite movie. Enjoy the things you love.

If you DO have a spouse, be thankful.

You don’t have to have a spouse to have a good Valentine’s Day, but that doesn’t mean when you do that it isn’t super special.

It is a day to love, and your spouse is supposed to be the person you love most. It’s an excuse to love your spouse even harder, and show them that.

This was my husband and I on our first Valentine’s Day. We had only been together for a little over a month. He took me to a nice restaurant, and gave me a sweet promise ring. Then, we went to a painting class. It was our last date before he would be gone for 3 months. To this day, it is still one of the best dates we have ever been on. ❤

Go out to dinner. (Not on the actual 14th though… Restaurants are beyond busy. Make dinner / get takeout or something on the 14th haha.) Give each other a little gift. It could be homemade or super small. But a gift to show your love is always a sweet gesture. Watch a movie or play a board game. Enjoy each other’s company.

A Hearty Conclusion (-;

Love is a gift from God. It deserves to be celebrated. (“We love because He first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19)

Valentine’s Day may make it more obvious who’s single and who’s not, but does it really matter? There are always people around us to love. It can be a romantic day for couples, and a fun day for singles.

I love the meaning behind Valentine’s Day, and shout out to St. Valentine for being the reason behind this holiday.

It’s not only just a holiday with a sweet meaning, but it is a day full of the colors pink and red. You can also eat as much chocolate as you want without feeling guilty.

What is there not to love?
