I found out really late into my Medium career that 50 claps were even a thing. It's been a few months now, and I always give 50.

I give 20ish claps on comments. There is no real reason for that number. It's just what I always do haha.

I have writers give me all kinds of random numbers of claps. I really don't care, because like you said, it's good as long as they read the entire article.
