On Wednesday morning, I went out for coffee with a few friends for a little white elephant party. Our gifts were supposed to be homemade/handmade.

White elephant is an “anonymous” gift exchange. Everyone brings a gift. Sometimes, each gift is numbered. Then, you draw a number that matches with one of the gifts. Other times, you draw a number to decide what order everyone gets to pick one out. A lot of times, people can “steal” your gift forcing you to either “steal” from someone else or pick another one out.

The only artistic ability in me is being able to write. I am not crafty or super creative. I go through phases of doodling and coloring, but that’s as colorful as it gets for me. I am actually pretty impatient when it comes to learning new skills and artsy hobbies.

So, for this gift exchange, I decided it was a good opportunity to find a small business in town to support. With a friend’s help, I found one that sells local people’s goods in their shop.

I walked and walked around that store. Eventually, I picked out a red and white wooden Christmas tree ornament and a hot chocolate kit…
