I was hardly spanked as a child. My mom could give a certain look at me or my siblings, and we'd crumble. My parents just didn't find it necessary. My husband was raised completely differently and was spanked with all kinds of things and very often. So, he is all about the "don't spare the rod." I personally don't believe that is what the verse even means, but that's a whole other thing lol.
