Should Christians Look At Their Horoscopes?
Listen up, Christians
By Grace K. Bianco
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…” — 2 Timothy 3:16
As New Age beliefs work their way into Christianity, a lot of people don’t realize what they are believing/doing. It all comes across so innocent. However, there are standards for us Christians. We cannot follow the world around us. New practices have to be questioned.
For example:
Crystals are bad.
Manifestation is bad.
Mediums/Psychics are bad. (Isaiah 8:19)
And of course, I believe horoscopes are bad.
Those are just a few of the big ones I can think of off the top of my head. If this surprises you, don’t feel bad. I almost bought crystals before looking into it. I used to read my horoscope and my friends’ horoscopes out loud in high school, because I thought it was just a funny thing.
For now, we will just talk about horoscopes.
I am no scholar.
I don’t have all of this figured out yet. I don’t know everything. I am not perfect. But as a Christian, we are supposed to continually be learning and preaching to others until the day we die.
I am not an expert when it comes to horoscopes. I am not even an expert when it comes to the Bible, BUT the little I do know is enough for me to know it is not okay.
“And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars — all the heavenly array — do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping things the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven.” — Deuteronomy 4:19
The stars and planets are not there for guidance. The only time a star should be guiding us is if we are on a ship. Other than that, they should have no say in our lives.
You may look at that Bible verse and say, “I don’t bow down and pray to the stars. I just know my zodiac sign, and I like seeing how accurate it is to my personality.”
Your identity is in Christ not in a sign.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” — 2 Corinithian 5:17
I know my sign and a lot about it. I am a Gemini. I know that my husband is a Scorpio. My parents are Cancers. I know a lot of people’s signs.
Maybe, there are many things I would relate with other Geminis on, but I also know that I relate a lot to people of all different signs.
I don’t want someone to hear I am Gemini, and believe that is who I am. I don’t look at my sign in hopes to understand myself better. I don’t look at my sign to validate the way I express myself.
I want my identity to reflect Jesus. I don’t want to blend in with the crowd.
If I was in a room full of people and a person walked around trying to figure out who was Christian and who was not, I hope I would be yanked out of that crowd immediately. The only “group” I want to be included and stereotyped in is God’s.
God gets jealous.
Throughout the Bible, there are many verses about how God gets jealous, and sometimes, his reactions are full of wrath. It deeply hurts and angers God when we don’t fully commit to Him.
“For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.” — Deuteronomy 4:24
If we look to anything but God for guidance, that becomes an idol in our life. We think of idols as being some gold calf we pray to, but in reality, an idol is just something you love more than God.
You may think you love God more than your sign, but if you are reading your horoscope or looking for answers, you have turned from God. There is no better or more correct guidance other than God’s.
“Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.” — Psalm 25:5
Where to go for answer?
What now? If you can’t look at your horoscope, what do you look at?
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.” — Romans 12:12
You can go to God and pray, but if you need something physical to guide you through each day, the Bible is perfect for that. There are instructions. You will find out more about your true identity. Everything you will ever need to truly live out your life well is in THAT book.
I hope this blog has taught you to be cautious when doing things of this world. God is a merciful God, but He is also just. He is to be feared. He can build up a city in seconds, but can also destroy it just as fast. Let Him be the one and only one to guide you.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6
