I am only an amateur writer just telling you all what has worked for me, and why I believe everyone deserves some access to read some of what you write to the world.

I am a smaller writer, just like many of us here on Medium. When I started writing, it was merely a hobby that quickly turned into a passion. I wanted it to become a career, but it didn’t happen for years.

When I started making money on here, it was too easy to see the money signs, and want it to add up. However, I started all of this with just a simple love for writing. I wanted to encourage people, and put my ideas/opinions out into the world. It didn’t start with the intention of it becoming anything. As much as I want this to be more of a career, I never want to lose sight of why I started.

So, I am here to explain my reasoning on the importance of having free posts on your page. Whether you started with the intention of making money or not, this could be what helps your audience grow.

How I Handle Unmetered and Metered Posts

I post three blogs a week. For a while, I only posted one metered blog a week, and the other two were free. As of lately, if I have a week where I believe my topics are a little more of an attention grabber, I will post two metered and one unmetered. I will always write at least one free post every week.

My free posts aren’t my worst posts. I put just as much of my heart into them as my metered posts. I don’t play favorites. It’s based on title and topic. For instance, my topics on marriage excel compared to other topics; therefore, majority are metered. When I write a more Christian based blog, it is free. I want any and everyone to have access to it.

When I wrote, “I Am Desperate For Followers: Are you?”, I knew it would probably bring in attention, but I genuinely wrote it to express my feelings about writing and to hopefully help others gain their own following. I wanted everyone to be able to read it. 1.5k claps, around 7 hours and 4 minutes of reading time, and 81 comments later, I do not regret making it free one bit.

The thing is not everyone wants to pay $5 a month to read. My friends and family like to show their support, but I don’t expect everyone to pay that. It’s not a lot of money, but it does add up. My unmetered posts usually bring in a little bit of attention, and help my audience grow. People don’t have to use one of their precious five free posts a month, and so, they tend to be more likely to read my writing.

I want people who enjoy my writing to be able to read at least some of my stuff. I want to connect with as many people as possible. I may miss out on some money here and there, but in the long run, it can help my writing platform grow while knowing that others will always have access to majority of my writing.

My Tidbit For You All

As for you all, I would highly consider writing a free post every once in a while. The readers on here that don’t pay may be picky about using their five free stories a month and would rather just read from another writer. By allowing them to read, you are helping your audience grow and could possibly be included in the algorithm more. It’s the best of both worlds.

If you post once a week, you could switch between metered and unmetered every other week. You could even do just one unmetered post a month. If you write more frequently, you could just throw a few unmetered posts in here and there.

In the end, Medium gives you the chance to choose. You do whatever you believe is best for your page. I am only an amateur writer just telling you all what works for me, and why I believe everyone deserves some access to read some of what you write to the world.
